AWB Condemns Minneapolis LGBTQ Bar Owner’s Anti-Semitic and Homophobic Remarks

A Wider Bridge strongly condemns the anti-Semitic and homophobic remarks of the owner of “Cheers”, an LGBTQ bar opening in Uptown Minneapolis. As reported by Lonny Goldsmith from TCJewfolk, the owner has been making deeply anti-Semitic and anti-Israel posts on Social Media, including accusing Jews of ‘taking over America’ and having a dual ‘loyalty to the most criminal state in the world ISRAEL.’  The owner also says that ‘Israel & it’s [sic] people must be eliminated.’

These allegations are plainly anti-Semitic.

  • The ‘Jew taking over” is a long used anti-Semitic trope that is related the misperception that Jews are different, alien people with strange powers to control others, and are to be blamed for many of the world’s problems. Jews are set apart and scapegoated.
  • Tying a citizen to the actions of any foreign state (with accurate facts or not) is an implication of dual loyalty – another common form of anti-Semitism lobbied against American Jews.
  • Calling for all Israelis to be eliminated is a blatant call to incite violence.

Once publicly criticized, the owner dug in, and used homophobic epithets against local LGBTQ leadership challenging his views.

This owner has no place opening a business which is supposed to cater to all.  If you live in the Twin Cities, please attend the June 21st LGBTQ protest rally outside “Cheers” and publicize widely.

A Wider Bridge stands with the local LGBTQ and Jewish Twin City communities in condemning this bigotry of having no place in our LGBTQ community.

Together we can send a strong message that all forms of bigotry — anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism, homo/transphobia, and Islamophobia — have no place in our LGBTQ movement.
