Israeli Movie Channel on satellite TV company Yes will this weekend celebrate gay director Eytan Fox’s 50th birthday, with a full weekend of screenings of Eytan’s movies. Fox will celebrate his 50th birthday on August 21.
Fox is considered a groundbreaking director in the Israeli film industry. Since the beginning of his career, he’s brought to the Israeli cinema a vibe of fresh air, color and lightness, with an emphasis on visual aesthetics and music: movies like “Shirat Hasirena” (‘Siren Song’), which on one hand is considered a quality movie, but on the other hand is a romantic comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. No wonder it became one of the milestones in the change and development of Israeli cinema.
But Fox is known mostly as a pioneer in bringing to center stage and into every-day Israeli discussions the subject of homosexuality and gay life. The TV show he directed, ‘Florentine’, was just the beginning of it, and then came the iconic “Yossi & Jagger” which made Eytan Fox world-famous.
Most of his pieces are a joint-creation with his life partner, writer and journalist Gal Uchovsky, and some of his movies were accompanied by songs written by Ivri Lider- another Iconic gay Israeli talent.
Fox’s movies have won countless awards in Israel and around the world and have managed to win the appreciation of both movie critics and audiences.
