Dr. Beyer will serve on the advisory board alongside Dr. Joel Kushner- Director, Institute for Judaism and Sexual Orientation, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion; Rebecca Weiner – Education Director at Congregation Sha’ar Zahav, David Katznelson – Director of Engagement and Outreach at the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco; and Susan Bluer – a founding member of the LGBT Alliance of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco.
A Wider Bridge announced today that Dr. Dana Beyer has joined its Advisory Board. Arthur Slepian, Executive Director of A Wider Bridge said, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Beyer join our Advisory Board. She brings an outstanding track record of leadership in both the LGTBQ and Jewish worlds, and most especially an important and needed voice in the area of transgender rights.” Dr. Dana Beyer is a retired eye surgeon who was a candidate for the Maryland state Senate in 2014. She is currently Executive Director of Gender Rights Maryland, the state’s trans political organization which successfully worked the gender identity bill to passage this year. She served a term as a senior adviser for Council Member Trachtenberg on the Montgomery County Council. She is chair of the national advisory board of Freedom to Work, and writes a weekly column for the Huffington Post. She recently served on the Rules Committee of the national Democratic Party, and has twice run for state Delegate in District 18.
Dana has been an advocate on public health issues, including research on the effects of DES and endocrine disruptors on human sexuality and reproduction, and was lead staffer passing the first county-wide ban of artificial trans fats in the U.S. – a ban that will be extended nationwide later this year. Dana has been VP of Equality Maryland and Maryland NOW, an HRC Governor, and a board member of Mobile Med and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE). She is currently on the board of Keshet, the national Jewish LGBT organization, and the steering committee of Progressive Neighbors, Montgomery County’s leading progressive advocacy organization.
Dana Beyer said: “In our ever-shrinking world, with an increasing number of overlapping identities, it remains important for us to use our experiences in different worlds to create a wider and stronger bridge towards understanding. While Jewish LGBT bonds between America, Canada and Israel may not be the most important during wartime, we do have a positive role to play as we work towards the greater good for our friends, families, and nations.”
