A Wider Bridge stands with the Ethiopian-Israeli community in mourning the heartbreaking loss of Solomon Tekah, an unarmed Ethiopian-Israeli teenager who was shot and killed by an off-duty Israeli police officer this week. As the Israeli police conduct a much-needed comprehensive investigation into this matter, which we hope will shed light on conflicting reports of what transpired, we must acknowledge the Ethiopian-Israeli community’s discourse about patterns of racism and excessive police force against their community.
As the LGBTQ non-profit supporting equality in Israel, A Wider Bridge stands in solidarity with the Ethiopian-Israeli community, and with our partner KALA, the Ethiopian-Israeli LGBTQ organization. As Jews, LGBTQ folks, people of color and allies, we believe Ethiopian-Israelis have a right to be treated with full dignity and respect. Ethiopian-Israelis have made valuable contributions to Israeli society on all levels, and yet continue to face many challenges. We call for concrete steps from our respective leaders to ensure that this tragedy does not occur again. We also call for continued conversations about racism in the US and Israel, as we work together to build an inclusive society for all.
