“So So Gay:” Music from Israel

Israel is a country with a rich musical heritage that stems from the many cultural influences that have travelled through its history. The UK gay blog “So So Gay” introduces 10 musical artists from Israel, not necessarily LGBT, though the list includes gay singers Harel Skaat and Yehonathan.

Chen Aharoni

For The X Factor enthusiasts, Chen Aharoni will not be a stranger. The one-time Khokav Nholad (Israeli Idol) contestant entered the UK competition in 2013 after having already established himself as a pop star on his home turf. While he may have been kicked out at Boot Camp, he returned home to be rewarded with the presenting role on the Israeli version and has recently released his debut English language single. We’d advise a return to these shores very soon.

Emily Karpel

Nicknamed as freckles by her fanbase, singer/songwriter Emily Karpel may currently be taking time out to enjoy the early stages of motherhood, but her hypnotic back catalogue warrants exploration. The daughter of acclaimed Israeli musician Avi Karpel, she delivers a vintage rich electro sound that is truly universal in appeal.

Yehonathan is a former teen idol who has performed alongside Melanie C and Five at the height of pop fever. Having relocated briefly to Los Angeles to explore acting, he has relaunched himself as a gay pop icon. With provocative imagery Yehonathan has sent the internet into a frenzy, can he do the same with the pop charts?

Harel Skaat

Khokav Nholad graduate Harel Skaat has clocked up nearly a decade at the forefront of the Israeli music industry. While his face may be known to British audiences following his appearance on Eurovision in 2010, his career has mainly centred around his home country. With a back catalogue that stretches from riotous rock to beautiful balladeering.
