HRC celebrates the birthday of gay marriage advocate Edie Windsor: On 20 June, she is celebrated her birthday.
For those who’ve been asleep for the past few years, the 86-year-old New Yorker is the plaintiff in Windsor vs The United States.
Windsor and Thea Spyer, her partner for over 40 years, married in 2007. Unfortunately, Spyer died two years later.
Windsor sued the US government when billed $363,053 in estate taxes because the Defense of Marriage Act made the couple’s marriage nonexistent.
As the Human Rights Campaign notes the high court’s 2013 ruling found parts of DOMA ‘violated the constitutional right to equal protection from the federal government.’
Happy birthday, Edie! And thanks!!
