Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) wrote a letter to DeVos Tuesday asking that she commit to issuing new guidelines for protecting LGBT students .
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) requested that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos issue new federal guidance to ensure LGBT students are not discriminated against in school. Feinstein’s letter follows the Trump administration’s decision to rescind guidance issued by the Obama administration to protect LGBT students.
“I request that you issue new guidance to states and local school districts on how to improve school environments for LGBT students that will prevent bullying and harassment and protect their right to access a high-quality education in a supportive setting,” Feinstein wrote. “I have significant concerns about making it the sole responsibility of states and local school districts to protect LGBT students. Federal guidelines are needed to help states and local school districts create a safe learning environment for all young people.”
