For countless generations, Jerusalem has been an epicenter of civilization, religion and culture. Despite all its history, the city has more recently been gripped by tension and division, with rigid fault lines and cultural norms, providing little room to engage with “the other.” Yet now a cultural revival is underway, fueled by a movement of young and dynamic Jerusalemites, including many from the city’s LGBT community. Through arts and culture that challenge the boundaries of religion, race, gender, and sexuality, these young artists are cultivating a new and hopeful environment of pluralism, diversity and understanding in a city that surely needs it.
